Unconscious Bias
Topics around feminism have for a very long time been delicate matters for me. A nonprofit with the words la femme in its name invites people to consider what femininity means to the beholder. The thing here is we don’t define you by your labels. We give general ideas of what topics we discuss here but the truth is we intentionally keep this very broad because we see and respect that we are all unique. We want you to feel safe with however you assimilate. And when we interject feminism into this conversation, I now value more than ever that advocating for human rights & women’s rights and all the topics connected to them need to be much louder here.
define la femme:
My work in the mental health field has expanded my perspective on many topics. Specifically in the crisis counseling work that I have been doing supporting people that have been deeply impacted by social, cultural, religious and associative stigmas to name a few. People have been judged, criticized and shamed by emotional and verbal mistreatment. And for many they aren’t even aware of how deeply this violation and abuse have imprinted on their subconscious. I recognize that not everyone is in this space of acknowledging how they’re being inflicted with bias that imparts a heavy weight on their ability to stand for a message. A message that is created by the media, community, family or the self.
Political elements are included in this mess. We have just spun out of another election that brought forward many topics around human rights on a larger platform due to all the campaigning the took place. Words like liberal, hard core left, hard core right have divided many. For some, they are threatened by our indifferences instead of celebrating our uniqueness and respecting the journey that we have each traveled. This is a bias I do not want to associate with. Knowledge is power, we can mindfully take notice to when judgements are made and unproductive critiques are spewed and use our voices to call for hard core boundaries. Someone degrading you and treating you unfairly because of who you are is a hard stop.
At la femme you are allowed to free yourself of the need for perfection. Here we will evoke your self-confidence and take pause so you can reflect on your soul. We embrace an array of topics and welcome all to share their story. We know that you've questioned your confidence, we see your struggles, we feel your pain and we know you are finally ready to take your power back. YOU…the generalized you, the one that isn't gender specific, or defined by your struggle or labeled by your medication. We want you to know that we're here to give you the platform to share your story and find your voice.
The dKol la femme Project has been created for YOU. Together let's raise a commotion in the community by letting your story be heard!
Much love, kindness and equality- d
